I managed to lock myself out of the house again last night. Which is cool, no prob, I learned my lesson from the first 20 times and have a cleverly hidden key in a magnetic box.

Of course, the box became full of moisture with all the recent freezing and thawing, and had frozen shut. So I had to stand outside in the cold and dark, trying to thaw it out with my hands.

But it's cool. No prob.

Later, I found out that one of the old Five Points gangs in New York was called the Dead Rabbits. I'm starting to understand why this is a town that thinks that the Knickerbockers was a good name for a sports team.

I had a stuffed dog named Knickerbocker when I was a kid.

I kind of like Knickerbockers because it's such a silly retro name for a team. Of course nothing will ever compare to the U of Chicago's football team calling itself the Maroons.

OT: Have you gotten any sort of hotel confirmation thing yet for MediaWest? We allegedly "should be hearing from them soon" but haven't and someone else on my flist was asking about it.

Not a thing. This is not unusual.

So I hear tell. Do you ultimately get mail confirmation or e-mail or what? And do you have to nag MW people/the hotel to get it?

Hey, knickerbockers were once considered damned FIERCE, as Christian would say. All the toughest newspaper-sellin', shoe-shinin' boys wore them! I actually think they are fiercer than the wacky-oversized pants the gang kids (and suburban kids who wish to be taken for gang kids) still seem to be wearing after all these years, as if they are wee kiddies wearing their daddy's pants for the day. Man, that was a style I thought would go out of fashion quick, and it hasn't.

I used to lock myself out of the house constantly, until I started carrying two housekeys on me at all time (that's on two different keychains, of course, not two keys on one keychain.) That way even if I accidentally leave one key on the table by the door inside in the hallway, which is something I used to do a lot, I still have the back up key in the pocketbook. The trick is to immediately retrieve the other key when you let yourself in and put it back in the pocketbook, so you have two again.

But the etymology of the name is pretty cool, if Wikipedia is to be believed.

Wanna borrow my sonic screwdriver? It won't do shit with the frozen magnetic box thingie, but you can send secret messages to your friend! And enemies!!

I love those old Five Points gang names. My favorite is the Plug Uglies.
